Aptoide is a "marketable" mobile application installation software application running on the Android operating system. At Aptoide, unlike Google's standard Android Play Store, there isn't an exclusive, centralized store; Instead, each user manages his own store.

The software package is published by Aptoide SA, a for-profit company incorporated in November 2011 and based in Lisbon, Portugal.  The name Aptoide consists of the words "APTO" (the Debian package manager) and "oide" (the last syllable for "Android").

Aptoide started as a proposal from Paulo Trezentos at the Magic Box Summer Camp 2009.

The proposal was accepted and would later become what is now Aptoide. The first phase of development was developed as part of the SAPO Summerbits meeting.

The idea behind Aptoide comes from different sources. On the one hand, the search for Linux installers in the European Mancoosi Project, another idea was Paulo Trezentos and his PhD project, in addition to the A5 Portugal Telecom telephony project, in which the team participated.

In late 2010, it was released on the Android Marketplace. This gave users the possibility to create their own store.

In August 2012, the Aptoide and Android Bazaar brands merged to provide better communication.

In November 2011, Aptoide joined the European continent.

In May 2015, Aptoide announced that it would start operations in Asia by opening an office in Singapore.
