There will be no return to the office on Twitter

The year 2020 came with many new features. It will surely be the time that changed the lives of many of us. The spread of the pandemic caused by the coronavirus that emerged in China in late December 2019 will leave behavioral changes in all social aspects of people's lives. Work, family, educational and even loving environments will be altered by the main recommendation that exists to combat covid-19, which is having to maintain distance between people.
Twitter is one of the most important companies in the technology industry. Although the headquarters are located in San Francisco, the company has more than 35 offices spread throughout the world in major cities such as Toronto, New York, Paris or Dublin. The social network dedicated to what is known as “microblogging” has almost 4,000 employees.
Given the progression of the disease and the insistent recommendations for social distancing, the company in charge of Jack Dorsey was one of the first to apply work from home to employees. In addition, from the last official statement and the information circulated, Twitter becomes one of the first companies to make an important change and allow those workers to enable them to work from home and not return to offices. 

First steps

During the first days of March, the expansion of the coronavirus was on the front page of the main newspapers and news in the world. Some governments and companies doubted the danger of the disease while others began to act. From her official blog Twitter already reported that they were attentive to what was happening and suspended all business trips and corporate events for prevention.
On March 2, the US company encouraged workers to start working from home. People could decide whether to go to the office or not. In the report released on his official blog, he detailed that it was not mandatory to stay at home (except for offices in Hong Kong, South Korea and Japan) but that they strongly recommended it and that they were in an internal process of reducing all kinds of meetings and events that involve contact between people.
A little more than a week later, on March 11, Twitter decided to make teleworking mandatory for all employees due to the need to prioritize the health and safety of the firm's members.

Telework as a definitive option

After more than a month of applying the telework modality on Twitter, the latest news on the popular social network refer to the post made on the official blog on May 12 in which, with the hashtag #LoveWhereverYouWork as a title, they communicate that although they were among the first to promote work from home, the same will not happen with the return to the offices.
The move Twitter takes is to let employees decide whether or not they want to return to traditional jobs when they can. The company believes it will not be until September. The possibility of staying in the homes will have all those that their type of work allows. From the company they affirm that:

“We were in a unique position to respond quickly and enable people to work from home given our emphasis on decentralization and support for a distributed workforce capable of working from anywhere. The past few months have shown that we can make that work. So if our employees have a role and a situation that allows them to work from home and want to continue doing so forever, we will make that happen. If not, our offices will be warm and welcoming, with some additional precautions, when we consider it safe to return.”

The news about the closing of the Twitter offices due to the coronavirus and the possibility of establishing the telework format in a definitive way opens the doors to the debate around this modality. It can be said that since working from home is something new and we have to adapt to it, the company in charge of Jack Dorsey has a good attitude when leaving its employees to choose which way is more comfortable for them since not all people get the same results, some feel more comfortable with teleworking than others. Twitter shows itself to be flexible and open to new horizons that may extend to all companies.
